- You are older than 21 years
- You have sepsis (a severe infection that affects your whole body)
- You developed sudden kidney injury within 48 hours of being in the ICU
- You need a breathing tube or mask (mechanical ventilation) within 48 hours of that kidney injury
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You do not have a very slow heart rate, certain heart rhythm problems, very low blood pressure, recent heart attack, severe heart valve disease, active seizures, or brain/spinal cord injury
