Who can take part

  • You must be between 22 and 64 years old.
  • You must have a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder and be in a major depressive episode.
  • You must have tried at least four different treatments for bipolar depression, including two FDA-approved medications or ECT, and they didn't work well enough or the effect didn't last.
  • You must be taking at least one stable medication for bipolar disorder (unless none are tolerated) for at least four weeks before surgery.
  • You must be able to have an MRI and have no other implanted stimulation devices, like a pacemaker.
  • You must not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next two years.
