Who can take part
- You have depression that is long-lasting (2+ years) or keeps coming back, and you are in a severe episode right now
- Your depression score on a standard questionnaire is 20 or higher
- You have tried at least two antidepressants at good doses from two different medication types and did not get a lasting improvement
- You can finish pre-surgery testing soon, including CT and MRI scans and memory/thinking tests
- You are age 21 to 80 and can sign the consent form in writing
- If you can become pregnant, you are not pregnant and agree to reliable birth control
