Who can take part

  • 18 years or older
  • Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc in the neck or lower back
  • Needing surgery at 1 or 2 levels in the neck (C2-T1) or lower back (L2-S1)
  • Not currently smoking or have quit smoking at least 6 weeks ago
  • No previous failed spinal fusion surgery
  • Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or less and bone density score (DEXA) of at least 2.0
