Can breathing exercises improve blood sugar in prediabetes?

This study tests if a special breathing technique (heart rate variability biofeedback) can help people with prediabetes improve their blood sugar control. You will attend screening visits and practice breathing exercises at home to see if this lowers your risk of developing diabetes.

Who can take part

  • You must have prediabetes (blood sugar levels between 100-125 mg/dL when fasting, or an HbA1c between 5.7-6.4%, or a blood sugar level between 140-199 mg/dL two hours after a glucose drink).
  • Your age must be between 18 and 65 years.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be between 20 and 40.
  • You cannot have diabetes, a history of certain surgeries, active infections, or mental illness.
  • You must not be taking heart-rate-affecting medications (like beta blockers) or drugs that change blood sugar (like steroids).
  • You cannot have certain chronic diseases (like heart disease, metabolic disease, or blood disorders) or cancer within the last 5 years.
