Who can take part

  • You are 65 years or older.
  • You are about to have a planned major surgery (like colorectal, stomach, lung, or bladder surgery) that will take more than 2 hours.
  • You will be given general anesthesia (you'll be fully asleep) during surgery.
  • Your memory and thinking are good — you don't have significant confusion or depression (you'd need a memory test to check).
  • You are not having heart, brain, or spine surgery, and you don't have a severe organ problem (like advanced heart failure).
