Who can take part
- You must have a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which is a bone marrow disorder that can cause low blood counts.
- Your MDS must be considered lower-risk, meaning it has a low, very low, or intermediate IPSS-R score.
- Before starting treatment, your hemoglobin (red blood cell count) must have been less than 10 grams per deciliter (g/dL), showing signs of anemia.
- Your erythropoietin (EPO) level before treatment must have been less than 500 U/L. (EPO is a hormone that signals your body to make red blood cells.)
- You must have started treatment with a biosimilar form of erythropoietin alfa between June 2018 and December 2021 at the IRCCS hospital in Bologna.
- You are 18 years or older and willing to give consent.
- You do not have other serious health problems, such as severe immune system weakness (ECOG >3) or other causes of anemia (like chronic inflammation, internal bleeding, or a type of anemia called hemolysis).
- You are not currently receiving other cancer chemotherapy drugs.
