Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older
  • You must be on ECMO (a machine that helps your heart and lungs work) for severe heart or lung failure
  • You must be in a special intensive care unit (either a Lung Recovery ICU or Heart ICU)
  • You must be able to follow simple commands or be only lightly sedated (RASS score of -2 or higher)
  • Your medical team must consider you stable enough to try light exercises with a special bed system (VitalGo Total Lift Bed)
  • You cannot be pregnant, have uncontrolled bleeding, or have a large open wound that prevents exercise
