Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You had heart surgery and are now in the heart intensive care unit (CTICU)
  • You may or may not have a pulmonary artery catheter (a thin tube in a blood vessel near your heart)
  • Your breastbone is closed after surgery and you do not have certain heart pumps like LVAD, ECMO, or Impella
  • You are still breathing with a ventilator when you leave the operating room (not already breathing on your own)
  • You do not have ongoing atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) that is hard to treat or frequent extra beats
