Bone density, vitamin D, and hearing loss in otosclerosis
Part of Ear, nose & throat, Hormones & metabolism clinical trials.
This study looks at how bone density and vitamin D levels relate to hearing loss in people with otosclerosis, a condition where extra bone growth in the ear causes hearing problems. It may help doctors understand why some people lose more hearing than others.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You are 18 or older
- You have been diagnosed with otosclerosis (a hearing problem caused by bone growth in the ear) by a doctor, OR you have a CT scan of your ear bone for another reason and have no hearing loss
- You have a CT scan of your temporal bone (the bone around your ear) available
- You have results from a bone density test and vitamin D blood test available
- You do not have a history of bone diseases like osteoporosis or Paget's disease, and you have not taken medications like bisphosphonates or steroids for bone health
- You have not had ear surgery (other than stapedectomy/stapedotomy) or radiation to your head/neck

This study checks whether people with Meniere’s disease have different bone density (bone strength) compared with expected patterns. It may help spot bone health risks early, especially if you’re affected by other conditions or medicines that weaken bones.
This study looks at how signals from muscles affect bone health in women of different ages. It aims to understand why bone density changes over time.
This study measures bone density and body composition in healthy women to create reference curves. It helps doctors understand what's normal for different ages and ethnic backgrounds.
This study looks at whether bisphosphonate treatment affects hearing loss in people with type 1 osteogenesis imperfecta. If you qualify, it may help researchers understand if treatment can protect hearing over time.
This study is looking at how vitamin D levels relate to bone health and overall health markers in people with and without osteoporosis. It aims to find better ways to understand and treat bone loss.
This study checks how well the inner ear and balance system work in children and young adults with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). The goal is to better understand hearing and balance issues that can affect daily life.
