Who can take part

  • You must have sickle cell disease, severe thalassemia, Diamond-Blackfan anemia, or another non-cancerous blood disorder.
  • For sickle cell disease: you need a brother or sister who is a perfect genetic match and willing to donate stem cells.
  • You should be in reasonably good health overall, able to do most daily activities (score of 60% or higher on a wellness scale).
  • If you or your partner can become pregnant, you must agree to use effective birth control during the study and for at least 4 months after transplant.
  • You cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy during the study.
  • You must not have an active, uncontrolled infection; HIV that is well-controlled may be allowed after evaluation by an infectious disease specialist.
