Who can take part

  • You must be scheduled for elective (non-emergency) heart surgery that requires a heart-lung machine.
  • You cannot have had this type of surgery before, or need combined procedures or valve repairs.
  • You cannot need special blood vessel access beyond the standard way (such as through the groin or neck).
  • Your blood lactate level must be normal (below 2 mmol/L) and you must not have severe anemia (hemoglobin above 90 g/L) before surgery.
  • You cannot need extra oxygen or intensive care before your surgery.
