Sugar vs. blood patch for air leak after lung surgery

This study compares two treatments for a stubborn air leak that continues more than 5 days after lung surgery. One treatment uses a concentrated sugar solution, the other uses your own blood to patch the leak. The goal is to see which works better to stop the leak and help you heal.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You had surgery to remove part of a lung (segmentectomy, lobectomy, or bilobectomy) between November 2023 and December 2024.
  • You have a persistent air leak that has lasted more than 5 days after your surgery.
  • You are willing to have a procedure using either a sugar solution or your own blood to seal the leak.
  • You do not have an active infection or sepsis, and you do not need urgent surgery to fix the leak.
