Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You are scheduled for planned surgery to replace the ascending aorta (the main artery from the heart) and part of the aortic arch.
- You have not had a past stroke with lasting symptoms like weakness or trouble speaking.
- You do not drink more than 2 drinks per day, use illegal drugs, or have severe health issues like liver, lung, or kidney failure.
- You are not pregnant, not claustrophobic, and can read and answer questions for memory tests.
- You do not have metal implants that are unsafe for MRI, and you have not had chemotherapy or brain radiation in the last year.
