Who can take part

  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 24 hours
  • You are ready to have your breathing tube taken out and passed a test to see if you can breathe on your own
  • Your oxygen level in the blood is below a certain threshold (PaO2/FiO2 less than 350) on the day your tube is removed
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You do not have a do-not-reintubate order
  • You are not pregnant
  • You do not have a tracheostomy tube in your throat
  • You can use a high-flow nasal cannula
  • You are not planning to use preventive non-invasive ventilation (a mask that blows air) after the tube is removed
  • You are expected to live more than one month
