Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are scheduled for elective (non-emergency) heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine
  • You have not had a breathing tube or breathing machine in the 2 weeks before surgery
  • You do not have nerve or muscle disease
  • Your heart pumps at least 40% of blood out with each beat
  • Your blood oxygen level is normal when breathing room air
