This trial tests a bundle of interventions to prevent silent brain infarctions (small 'silent' strokes) and thinking problems after heart or blood vessel surgery with a heart-lung machine. If you are 60 or older and having such surgery, this study may help protect your brain health.

Who can take part

  • You are 60 years or older
  • You are scheduled for heart or blood vessel surgery that uses a heart-lung machine
  • No metal implants or other reasons you cannot have an MRI scan
  • You can understand and complete thinking tests (no severe hearing, vision, or language problems)
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have a life-threatening illness expected to shorten your life to less than 3 months
