Iron supplements and the immune system in HHT

Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia

This study looks at how iron supplements affect the immune system in people with HHT (a genetic condition that causes bleeding from abnormal blood vessels). You may be placed in one of three groups depending on your iron and ferritin levels.

Who can take part

  • You must be an adult (18 or older) diagnosed with HHT (a condition that causes abnormal blood vessels).
  • You must have a confirmed genetic mutation in one of the genes linked to HHT (ENG, ACVRL1, or MADH4).
  • You need to be part of the CIROCO study (a long-term research registry for HHT).
  • Your iron level (ferritin) will determine which group you can join – some groups require iron levels above 25, while one group requires levels below 25.
  • You cannot have received iron supplements (pills or IV) or a blood transfusion in the last 3 months, unless you are in the group that allows ongoing iron therapy.
  • You should not have active cancer, a recent infection, or an autoimmune disease that alters your immune system.
