Checking if early skull surgery helps after a major stroke

This study looks at whether doing a surgery to remove part of the skull (decompressive hemicraniectomy) soon after removing a large blood clot from the brain helps people who have had a very severe stroke. It is for people who have had a stroke caused by a blockage in a major artery and have already had a procedure to open that artery.

Who can take part

  • You must have had a very severe stroke in one side of the brain, affecting the middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery.
  • You must be between 18 and 75 years old.
  • You must have had a procedure to remove the clot (mechanical thrombectomy) within 24 hours of when you were last seen well.
  • You must be able to have the skull surgery within 6 hours after the clot removal procedure.
  • You must not have any major bleeding in the brain or other serious brain diseases.
