Testing sound-based brain signals to predict recovery after severe brain injury

This study checks how a brain responds to two kinds of sounds—neutral tones and emotional sounds—in people with a persistent disorder of consciousness after a serious event like stroke, head injury, or cardiac arrest. Who can take part

  • You are in an ICU after cardiac arrest, stroke, a specific type of brain bleed, or head trauma
  • You have a persistent disorder of consciousness, at least 12 hours after sedation is stopped (or you already had a related brain-signal check)
  • If you already had a prior brain-signal test, it showed only responses to neutral sounds (not emotional) more than 6 months ago
  • You are not currently sedated, and you are not considered near-death
  • You are able to hear sounds (no known deafness), and you are not brain-dead
