Who can take part

  • You are 65 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for a surgery that is not on your heart or lungs and will last 1 to 3 hours.
  • Your health status is classified as ASA I or II (generally healthy or mild illness).
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is between 18 and 30.
  • You do not have serious heart or lung problems, a bleeding disorder, or active infections.
  • You have not had chemotherapy, radiation, or certain medications (antibiotics, steroids, NSAIDs) in the past 3 months.
