Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • You are scheduled for a first-time knee replacement on one knee only
  • You are planning to have spinal anesthesia for the surgery
  • You are generally healthy or have mild to moderate health conditions (ASA I–III)
  • You can understand the study and give written consent
  • You are not allergic to numbing medicines used in blocks
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
  • You do not have severe liver, kidney, or heart problems
  • You do not have a history of nerve pain
  • You do not have an infection where the block would be placed
  • You do not have a nerve or muscle condition in your legs
