Nerve blocks for knee replacement pain relief

Who can take part

  • You are having a first-time total knee replacement surgery on one knee only
  • Your doctor plans to use spinal anesthesia (numbing medicine injected into your spine)
  • You are in generally good health (ASA class I, II, or III—your surgeon can confirm this)
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medications you cannot stop
  • You are not currently taking opioid pain medications regularly or have chronic pain conditions
  • Your BMI (body mass index) is 35 or lower
