Who can take part

  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • Your doctor has already decided you are ready for a weaning trial (a test to see if you can breathe on your own).
  • You do not have a tracheostomy tube in your windpipe.
  • You do not have a condition called atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat).
  • You do not have liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the liver).
