Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and have a chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) surgery that requires general anesthesia.
  • You are considered an ASA class 2, 3, or 4 (a rating of your overall health before surgery) — if you are class 4, your starting blood pressure must be above 65 mmHg.
  • You do not have a known heart problem (like severe valve disease or heart failure) or a history of neck surgery or injury.
  • You are not taking certain blood pressure pills (ARBs or ACE inhibitors) by mouth, and your body mass index (BMI) is between 15 and 30.
  • Your surgery will not be done while you are lying on your side, front, or in a feet-up position.
