VR training to protect thinking after surgery in older adults

This trial tests if using virtual reality (VR) brain training before surgery can help protect memory and thinking skills in older adults with small vessel disease in the brain. If you are 60 or older, have this condition, and are having non-heart, non-brain surgery under general anesthesia, this study may be for you.

Who can take part

  • You are 60 years of age or older.
  • An MRI has shown you have small vessel disease in your brain.
  • You are scheduled for surgery that is not on the heart or brain and will be under general anesthesia.
  • You have not taken any medication to improve memory or thinking in the last 3 months.
  • You are able to tolerate wearing a VR headset (no severe dizziness or nausea).
  • You do not have a pacemaker or other metal implants that would prevent an MRI.
