Who can take part

  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) and sedated so you have no spontaneous breaths.
  • Your oxygen level is low (oxygenation index under 300 mmHg).
  • Your doctor believes you need a test to find the right ventilator pressure (PEEP).
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are not pregnant.
  • You do not have conditions that prevent the EIT chest belt (like a heart device, chest wounds, or severe chest shape changes).
  • You or your legal representative can give consent to participate.
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate are stable enough to tolerate high ventilator pressures.
  • You do not have a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or air in the chest cavity (mediastinal emphysema) as decided by your doctor.
