  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU)
  • You have severe pneumonia and need a breathing machine (ventilator)
  • You are sedated (RASS score -1 or lower)
  • You are not pregnant
  • You do not have a terminal illness, significant lung scarring, lung cancer, or certain other serious conditions
