This trial uses a special brain-mapping test called high-density ECoG to study how people who have lost speech due to stroke, brain tumor, or ALS can be helped by reading brain signals when they imagine speaking. It may lead to new devices that let people with severe speech problems communicate using only their thoughts.

Who can take part
- You are between 20 and 80 years old.
- You can understand and agree to take part in the study.
- Your speech problems have lasted more than 12 months and have not improved much after 3-6 months of therapy.
- You have severe speech difficulty (such as not being able to speak clearly or understandably) due to a stroke, brain tumor, ALS, or locked-in syndrome.
- You can still understand language fairly well (hearing and reading comprehension at least 80% of normal).
- You do not have a metal implant or other condition that would make an MRI or brain surgery unsafe.
