Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with rheumatic valvular heart disease (a condition where the heart valves are damaged by a prior strep infection).
  • You are 18 to 80 years old.
  • You have severe pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
  • You are not planning to have heart valve surgery in the next 6 weeks.
  • You do not have uncontrolled high blood pressure (above 170/110), low blood pressure (below 90/50), or unstable heart conditions.
  • You have not had a stroke or heart attack in the last 6 months, and you do not take nitrates (medications for chest pain).
