This study tests whether an antibiotic called rifabutin works better for treating a difficult lung infection (Mycobacterium abscessus) that resists a common antibiotic. You may qualify if you've been diagnosed with this infection and your lab tests show it can resist clarithromycin.

Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older
  • Confirmed diagnosis of Mycobacterium abscessus lung infection
  • Lab tests show your infection has inducible clarithromycin resistance (meaning it resists a standard antibiotic in a specific way)
  • Your infection is active on chest imaging (X-ray or CT scan)
  • You are well enough to start antibiotic treatment
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and can take rifabutin without severe allergic reactions
