Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU)
  • You need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) started within 72 hours of arriving at the ICU, or you're already on one when you arrive
  • Your doctors expect you to need the breathing machine for at least 3 more days after the study starts
  • You can receive nutrition through a feeding tube (no major bowel problems that would prevent this for at least a week)
  • You are not expected to pass away within 48 hours, and your family has not chosen a 'do not resuscitate' code level 3
