How Lungs Distribute Air and Blood in Critically Ill Children

Who can take part

  • Child is under 12 years old and hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU)
  • Child is on a breathing machine (intubated with conventional mechanical ventilation) and sedated
  • Child weighs between 3 and 40 kg (approximately 7 to 88 pounds)
  • Child has a central line (thin tube) placed in the large vein in the upper chest
  • Parents or legal guardians have signed informed consent
  • Child does not have significant lung air leaks around the breathing tube, heart problems, recent chest surgery, or severe low blood oxygen levels
