  • Adenocarcinoma (a specific type of rectal cancer) confirmed by biopsy
  • Cancer is within 10 cm of the anus and is locally advanced (stage T3–4 or involves lymph nodes)
  • Cancer cells are MSS/pMMR type (a genetic marker showing the tumor responds well to standard treatment)
  • No prior radiation, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy for this cancer
  • Good overall health with adequate blood counts, liver, and kidney function
