Who can take part

  • Age 18 or older
  • Cancer confirmed or highly suspected to be blocking bile ducts near the liver, shown on imaging
  • High bilirubin level (>3 mg/dL) indicating bile is backed up
  • Not a candidate for surgery, OR candidate for surgery but meets at least one special condition (small remaining liver, severe jaundice, malnutrition, or needs chemotherapy first)
  • No previous bile duct drainage procedure
  • No current infection of bile ducts (fever and high white blood cells)
