Who can take part
- Diagnosed with major depressive disorder (depression without hallucinations or delusions) for at least 2 weeks
- Either never treated with antidepressants before, or tried up to 2 antidepressants in this current episode that didn't work or caused side effects
- Body mass index between 18 and 40 (generally healthy weight range)
- Medically stable with normal heart rhythm, blood pressure, and physical exam results
- No history of bipolar disorder, psychosis, substance abuse in the past 6 months, or severe suicidal thoughts/behavior in the past 3 months
