You may qualify if you have severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)—a life-threatening lung condition—and are currently on a ventilator.

Who can take part

  • You have moderate-to-severe ARDS (severe lung failure) diagnosed within the past week
  • You are on a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) and have been for less than 4 days
  • Your doctors do not expect you to be taken off the ventilator within the next 24 hours
  • You do not have a neuromuscular disease that affects your ability to breathe on your own
  • You do not have severe liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or a history of abnormal heartbeats
  • You are not pregnant and do not have active abdominal or digestive infections
