Who can take part
- You are an adult currently on a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) in volume-control mode
- You have been diagnosed with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome, a severe lung condition) within the last 48 hours
- You are sedated and given paralysis medication while on the ventilator
- You can have an esophageal balloon catheter placed (a thin tube through your mouth to your food pipe to measure lung pressure)
- You are able to lie flat on your back for height measurement without medical problems that would prevent it
- Your height can be measured using standard methods (no severe deformities or loss of both legs)
