Who can take part

  • You must be at least 18 years old and have been on a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) for more than 2 days
  • Your medical team must agree you are ready to start coming off the ventilator based on specific breathing and heart stability tests
  • Your oxygen levels in the blood must be adequate (PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio greater than 150)
  • You cannot have severe brain or spinal cord injury (such as spinal cord injury above the mid-back)
  • You cannot be allergic to doxapram or be pregnant or breastfeeding
