Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for your first total knee replacement surgery at the University of Chicago.
  • Your doctor believes you can go home the same day after surgery.
  • You agree to be randomly assigned to either intravenous or spinal anesthesia.
  • You do not have any medical reasons that would make either type of anesthesia unsafe for you.
  • You can understand and complete surveys and questionnaires about your thinking and recovery.
