Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • Your oxygen level in the blood must be low (PaO2/FiO2 ratio 200 or less).
  • Your carbon dioxide level must be below 45 mmHg.
  • You should have symptoms like shortness of breath or discomfort (score 4 or more on a 0-10 scale), or rapid breathing (25 or more breaths per minute), or low carbon dioxide, or pain (score 4 or more).
  • You cannot have severe asthma or COPD flare-up, or need oxygen at home.
  • You cannot have sudden heart failure, unstable blood pressure, severe acidosis, or low consciousness.
