Who can take part

  • You have severe breathing failure (ARDS) that started less than a week ago, often from pneumonia, infection, trauma, or shock.
  • Your chest imaging shows cloudy areas in both lungs that aren't due to fluid or collapsed lung tissue.
  • Your breathing problem is not mainly from heart failure or fluid overload.
  • Your oxygen level in the blood is low (PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 200 or less) while on mechanical ventilation.
  • You are 18 years old or older and not pregnant.
  • You do not have a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), severe heart failure, or a pacemaker that prevents safe placement of monitoring equipment.
