Who can take part

  • You have sickle cell disease (any type: SS, SC, S/beta0, or S/beta+).
  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are in the hospital for acute chest syndrome, which means you have a fever or breathing problems and a new shadow on your lung X-ray.
  • You need extra oxygen (at least 2 liters per minute) to keep your oxygen level at 95% or higher.
  • You agree to take part and sign a consent form.
  • You are not already on home oxygen or a breathing machine, and you do not have other serious lung conditions.
