Tocilizumab for severe chest crisis in sickle cell disease

Who can take part

  • You have sickle cell disease of any type (like SS, SC, or S-beta thalassemia).
  • You are at least 2 years old.
  • You are in the hospital for acute chest syndrome (fever and/or breathing problems with a new finding on a chest X-ray or CT scan).
  • You need extra oxygen (at least 2 liters per minute) or a breathing machine for less than 48 hours.
  • If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test and use effective birth control for 3 months after treatment.
  • You must not have certain other serious infections or have taken certain other medicines recently.
