Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 74 years old.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be below 30.
  • You must have a stroke or traumatic brain injury confirmed by imaging (like CT or MRI).
  • You must be on a breathing machine (ventilator) through a tube in your throat or neck for at least 24 hours, and your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure) must be stable.
  • You must not have any of the following: infection at the implant site, severe uncontrolled infection, metal allergy, uncontrolled pressure in the brain, severe lung disease (like COPD with respiratory failure, pneumonia, collapsed lung, chest injury), severe heart disease, severe kidney or liver disease, seizures, spinal cord injury, chest wall deformity, muscle weakness (like myasthenia), brainstem injury, serious psychiatric or cognitive disorders, life expectancy less than 72 hours, or a decision to withhold life-sustaining treatment.
  • You must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
