Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You had a first stroke (no prior symptomatic strokes) involving one side of the brain, and it happened 14 to 90 days ago.
  • You have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) hard enough that it shows up on a special X-ray test called a videofluoroscopic swallowing study.
  • You are medically stable and can sit during the sessions.
  • You can follow simple verbal or supported instructions.
  • You do not have certain medical conditions, such as a prior stroke, brainstem stroke, epilepsy, a pacemaker or other implanted device, or head and neck cancer.

This trial tests if a gentle electrical current applied to the back of the head can help improve swallowing in people who have had a stroke in the front part of the brain. It may be an option if you are between 30 and 75 years old and still have trouble swallowing 1 to 6 months after your stroke.
