This study looks at whether heart rate variability (a measure of your heart's ability to adapt to stress) can help predict delirium (confusion or disorientation) after major abdominal surgery in older adults. You may qualify if you are 65-85 years old, having major abdominal surgery, and do not have serious heart, nervous system, or memory problems.

Who can take part

  • Are 65 to 85 years old.
  • Are scheduled for major abdominal surgery under general anesthesia.
  • Expected to stay in the hospital for at least 7 days after surgery.
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 28.0.
  • Are classified as ASA I, II, or III (generally healthy to mild or moderate systemic disease).
  • Are conscious, mentally competent, and able to cooperate with heart rate variability measurements and questionnaires.
  • Provide written informed consent.
