Light therapy for stroke-related muscle stiffness

This study tests a light-based therapy (photobiomodulation) to see if it can help reduce muscle stiffness in people recovering from a stroke. Participants will continue their usual rehabilitation while receiving this additional treatment.

Who can take part

  • You must be an adult.
  • You must have had a stroke (either ischemic or hemorrhagic) affecting one side of the body.
  • You must be currently enrolled in a rehabilitation program.
  • You must have some ability to stand or walk.
  • You must not have uncontrolled serious health conditions.
  • You must not have a known sensitivity to light.
  • Your muscle stiffness must not be at the most severe level (grade 4 on the Modified Ashworth Scale).
  • You must not have fixed joint contractures that limit ankle movement.
