Who can take part

  • You have rectal adenocarcinoma that has spread into the rectal wall or nearby lymph nodes but not to distant organs.
  • You are scheduled to receive radiation therapy (short or long course) combined with a fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy (like capecitabine or 5-FU).
  • You are physically active and able to care for yourself (ECOG 0 or 1).
  • You have fewer than 3 bowel movements per day and no significant abdominal pain or rectal cramping.
  • You have not had surgery to remove part of your rectum or intestines before.
  • You do not have active inflammatory bowel disease, severe diarrhea, or previous pelvic radiation.
