Who can take part

  • You’re age 18 to 68 and can sign consent and follow study visits.
  • You have type 1 diabetes that started before age 40 and you needed insulin for over 5 years; your age plus insulin duration must total over 28.
  • Your body’s insulin-making ability is very low (very low C-peptide on a special meal test at 60 and 90 minutes).
  • You have had a kidney transplant either more than 3 months ago or will get islet and kidney transplant from the same donor within 72 hours; you’re on stable anti-rejection medicines (tacrolimus and/or other listed meds) with low-dose prednisone if used.
  • Your kidney function is stable enough for the trial (creatinine not much worse than your usual over the prior 3 months), and you don’t have new high urine protein after transplant.
  • You meet key limits: weight 90 kg or less and BMI 30 or less; blood pressure controlled; no untreated unstable eye disease (proliferative retinopathy).
